A Nairobi court has granted detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) permission to detain a man accused of masterminding a string of high-value burglaries targeting electronics shops in the capital’s Central Business District (CBD).
Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina on Thursday allowed investigators to hold Robbisson Warui Mureithi for seven days as they continue probing the alleged theft of computer accessories worth over Sh74 million.
The prosecution had initially sought ten days to conclude investigations, but the court ruled that seven days were sufficient to enable detectives to gather additional evidence, record statements, and trace missing items.
DCI Links Suspect to Multiple Nairobi Shop Break-Ins
According to an affidavit filed in court, the suspect is believed to be part of a criminal syndicate responsible for breaking into shops within Nairobi’s CBD and stealing computer hardware, laptops, and accessories.
The case stems from two formal complaints lodged at Central Police Station by Robinson Ngeh Koshi and Shadrack Mbugua, both traders dealing in computers and related accessories. The two reported that their shops located at Tembo Building were broken into on the night of October 15 and 16, 2025, leading to the loss of goods valued at Sh74 million.
Police investigations revealed that CCTV footage from the premises allegedly captured Warui among the individuals involved in the break-in.
Investigators Recover Alcohol, Launch Parallel Inquiry
Detectives later traced the suspect to his residence in Komarock Estate, where they conducted a search. While the missing laptops and accessories were not recovered, officers found several brands of alcohol, which the suspect failed to account for.
The DCI informed the court that the discovery opened up a second line of investigation into the possible burglary of a liquor store believed to be located in the Kahawa area or its environs.
“There is a need to establish the owner of the broken liquor store, record their statement, and verify the source of the recovered alcohol,” the investigating officer stated in court documents.
The DCI also indicated that forensic and regulatory experts from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) would be involved to authenticate the seized alcoholic products and determine whether they were genuine or contraband.
Police Seek to Identify Vehicle and Other Suspects
Investigators are also working to identify the motor vehicle reportedly used in the commission of the offence and to apprehend other accomplices who remain at large.
According to the DCI, Warui is well-acquainted with the other suspects, and his premature release could jeopardize ongoing investigations by allowing him to interfere with witnesses or evidence.
“There is an urgent need to complete electronic and documentary analysis of materials obtained so far and to verify the identities of the remaining suspects,” the prosecution told the court.
Court Grants Seven Days, Emphasizes Swift Probe
In granting the seven-day detention period, Chief Magistrate Onyina emphasized the need for investigators to act expeditiously and ensure the suspect’s constitutional rights are upheld throughout the process.
The case, registered under the Penal Code sections 304(2) (burglary) and 279 (stealing), will be mentioned after the seven-day period to review progress and determine whether charges will be formally filed.
Context: Rising Concerns Over Organized Theft in Nairobi
The case comes amid increasing concern over organized theft rings targeting electronics retailers and warehouses within Nairobi’s business district. Security experts have urged shop owners to strengthen surveillance systems and collaborate closely with law enforcement to curb such crimes.
If found guilty, Warui could face lengthy imprisonment for burglary and theft, both serious felonies under Kenyan law.
The DCI continues to appeal to members of the public who may have information regarding the case or the whereabouts of other suspects to come forward and assist with the investigation.
