Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has cautioned Kenyans that desecrating national symbols, including the flag, is a serious criminal offence, following viral footage showing football fans stomping on the Kenyan flag after a CAF Champions League match.
Speaking in Wajir on Wednesday, September 24, during the 45th Jukwaa La Usalama Tour, Murkomen condemned the act, stressing that the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act strictly prohibits misuse of the flag, emblems, and names tied to the country’s identity.
“Many people don’t know that there is the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act. I urge the Inspector General of Police to ensure the law takes its course,” said Murkomen.
Incident Sparks Outrage After CAF Champions League Match
The controversy erupted days after Kenya Police FC defeated Mogadishu City FC 3-1 in the CAF Champions League. Shortly after the match, videos circulated widely on social media showing jubilant fans trampling and kicking the Kenyan flag.
The footage sparked public outrage, with many Kenyans terming it a disrespectful act and an insult to national pride. Citizens across the country demanded action against those involved, calling for stricter enforcement of laws that safeguard national symbols.
Enforcement of National Symbols Law
CS Murkomen emphasized that desecrating the Kenyan flag and other national symbols not only undermines unity and patriotism but also attracts legal consequences.
“When you joke with our symbols of national unity and pride, you have overstayed your welcome,” he added, warning perpetrators that authorities would not hesitate to prosecute them.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that investigations into the incident were underway.
“That matter is extremely serious, and I can confirm that the matter is under control,” said Kanja.
Under the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, offenders risk fines or imprisonment if found guilty of desecrating or misusing the flag and other national emblems.
Renewed Debate on Respect for National Identity
The incident has reignited debate about the respect and protection of Kenya’s national symbols. Civil groups, leaders, and ordinary citizens have called on the government to intensify public education on the laws surrounding the use of national emblems.
Analysts note that the incident highlights a growing need for awareness among the youth, particularly sports fans, about the sanctity of national identity symbols and their role in fostering patriotism.
As investigations continue, authorities have urged Kenyans to treat the flag and other national symbols with the dignity they deserve, warning that future offenders will face the full force of the law.
