Vulnerable senior citizens across Kenya are set to benefit from enhanced healthcare and welfare support following a KSh3 million sponsorship from KCB Bank towards the second edition of the Run 4 Seniors initiative organized by Mama Ibado Charity.

The partnership, announced ahead of the July 18, 2026 event at Karura Forest, seeks to raise awareness and mobilize resources for elderly persons who continue to face significant challenges accessing healthcare, nutrition and social support.

The annual charity run has rapidly grown into one of Kenya’s leading platforms advocating for the rights and wellbeing of senior citizens. Organizers say the event provides an opportunity for the public, corporate organizations and development partners to contribute towards programs that directly impact elderly people living in vulnerable communities.

Run 4 Seniors Chairman Moses Mwangi described the sponsorship as a major boost to efforts aimed at improving the quality of life of older persons, noting that many senior citizens continue to struggle with poverty, isolation and limited access to healthcare services.

According to Mwangi, the initiative seeks to remind society that senior citizens deserve dignity, care and support after spending decades contributing to their families, communities and the nation.

Mama Ibado Charity President Ahmed Jibril said proceeds from the run will be directed towards programs that provide healthcare assistance, food support and psychosocial care for elderly beneficiaries.

He noted that many seniors face serious health challenges but lack the resources required to access treatment, medication and routine medical care. Through its Seniors Healthcare Program, the organization aims to bridge that gap and ensure elderly persons receive the support they need.

The charity has already made a significant impact through its Seniors Feeding Program, which has provided food support to more than 2,000 elderly persons while benefiting over 5,000 family members under their care. The organization currently operates welfare programs targeting vulnerable communities in Isiolo and Kakamega counties.

KCB Foundation Director Mendi Njonjo said the bank remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote inclusion and protect vulnerable members of society.

She emphasized that senior citizens deserve recognition and support, adding that the partnership reflects KCB’s broader commitment to social impact and community development across the country.

This year’s event is expected to attract hundreds of participants from different parts of the country. Organizers have planned 5-kilometre, 10-kilometre and 15-kilometre race categories to encourage participation from runners of all ages and fitness levels.

The organizers have called on government agencies, private sector players, civil society organizations and members of the public to register and participate in the event, saying collective action is necessary to improve the welfare of Kenya’s growing elderly population.

With healthcare costs continuing to rise and many elderly citizens lacking reliable income, stakeholders say initiatives such as Run 4 Seniors are becoming increasingly important in providing support and restoring dignity to older members of society.

The event is expected to further strengthen national conversations around ageing, healthcare access and social protection while generating resources to support some of Kenya’s most vulnerable senior citizens.
