Bernard Githinji Maina Arrested in Sh300K Kenya Power Bribe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Kenya Power employee over allegations of demanding a Sh300,000 bribe.

The suspect, Bernard Githinji Maina, is a meter reader attached to the Runda sector.

Investigators say he demanded the money in exchange for restoring electricity supply at Runda Mumwe Estate in Nairobi.

Alleged Sh300,000 Demand

According to the Commission, the suspect allegedly demanded Sh300,000 from a resident on January 24, 2026.

He reportedly promised to facilitate reconnection of electricity that had been disconnected months earlier.

Investigators claim he also threatened the complainant with a Sh2 million electricity bill if the payment was not made.

Preliminary investigations indicate the estate’s electricity had been disconnected on October 25, 2025 over an alleged illegal connection.

However, the complainant reportedly had no outstanding electricity bill arrears at the time.

Arrest in Sting Operation

The EACC said it received a formal complaint on February 27, 2026.

This triggered investigations that led to a sting operation.

Bernard Githinji Maina was allegedly arrested while receiving Sh180,000 from the complainant at Runda Mumwe Estate.

After the arrest, he was escorted to the Integrity Centre for processing.

He was later transferred to Kilimani Police Station where he spent the night in custody.

Bail Pending Investigations

The suspect was later released on a cash bail of Sh50,000.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The suspect is expected to be formally charged once the probe is complete.

EACC Reaffirms Anti-Bribery Efforts

In a statement, the EACC said it remains committed to fighting corruption in public service delivery.

“The Commission remains resolute in dismantling corrupt networks that exploit citizens seeking essential services,” the agency stated.

Public Urged to Report Bribery

The arrest comes amid rising public concern about corruption in essential service sectors.

Kenya Power has previously warned customers against engaging staff in unofficial transactions.

Authorities have urged members of the public to report bribery or extortion attempts through official channels.
