Alex Anyolo Kikuyu Released on Bail in Threats Case Against Senator Hezena Lemaletian

Alex Anyolo Kikuyu has been arraigned in court over allegations that he issued death threats to Hezena Lemaletian, a Samburu nominated senator.

Kikuyu appeared before Lucas Onyina at the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court under a miscellaneous application in which prosecutors sought seven days of custodial orders to complete investigations.

Threats Reported to DCI

The senator reported the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, leading to Kikuyu’s arrest.

According to the complaint, the senator was in her office at Bunge Towers when she received a series of threatening messages sent via WhatsApp.

Phones and SIM Cards Seized

Investigators told the court that upon arrest, Kikuyu was found in possession of three mobile phones with SIM cards. Police also recovered 10 Airtel SIM cards and 23 Safaricom SIM card holders, whose IMEI numbers were produced in court.

Investigating officer Inspector George Ndung’u said the devices and SIM cards require forensic analysis to establish subscriber details and retrieve relevant data. He added that the suspect’s bank and mobile money statements must be obtained to verify information recorded in witness statements.

Prosecution Sought Custody

Inspector Ndung’u argued that Kikuyu posed a flight risk and should be detained pending completion of investigations.

However, the defence opposed the application, with Kikuyu telling the court that he is not a flight risk, would not interfere with investigations, and has a fixed place of abode in Buruburu, where he lives with his family.

Court’s Decision

In his ruling, the magistrate found that the prosecution had failed to demonstrate compelling reasons to warrant continued detention.

The court noted that the seized gadgets were already in police custody, making it unlikely that the suspect could interfere with investigations.

“I am not convinced that there is any compelling reason to warrant continued detention of the respondent,” the magistrate ruled.

Kikuyu was consequently released on a cash bail of Sh20,000 pending the conclusion of investigations. The matter will be mentioned on 16 February 2026.
