A man accused of masquerading as an officer of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to defraud jobseekers of more than Sh1.6 million has been arraigned before a Nairobi court.
Erick Kimutai Cheruiyot appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, where he pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of obtaining money by false pretences.
Alleged Fake NIS Job Scam
According to the charge sheet, Cheruiyot is accused of committing the offences between August 23 and September 15, 2024, jointly with another person not before the court, with intent to defraud.
In the first count, the prosecution alleges that he obtained Sh827,500 from Michael Kipkoech by falsely pretending that he was in a position to secure employment for Kipkoech’s son with the National Intelligence Service.
In a second count, he is accused of obtaining Sh807,000 from Wesley Mutai, again by falsely claiming that he could secure employment for Mutai’s daughter with the State intelligence agency.
The offences were allegedly committed on diverse dates between August 27 and September 10, 2024, at an unknown location.
Court Sets Bail Terms
After taking his plea, the court ordered Cheruiyot to post a bond of Sh300,000, with an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000, to secure his release pending trial.
The case will be mentioned on a later date for further directions.
